Jamie's American Road Trip Episode 2

26.David Bowie: "All the Madmen / All the Madmen"

In late 1970 the LP "The man who sold the world" and was released in the U.S., but not out in England, so releasing a single thought to promote the LP in the U.S. and advance the contents of the album across the Atlantic. Unfortunately the idea was scrapped and "All the Madmen / Janine" was not released, Mercury decided to release a small run of 7 "promotional only in the USA.

The 7" was released in December with a monaural version and edited the theme (3:14) on both sides, although some websites say that was launched in April 1971 ( for more info for musicians, studios and producers go to post 25 ).

There is a live version of the song that was recorded in January or February 1971 at a party in Hollywood, with Bowie on vocals and acoustic guitar, it was believed lost for many years, but in the soundtrack of the film "Mayor of Sunset Strip March 2004 included the introduction of this recording, which later merged with the original version, although not the full version is a great addition, because there are very few recordings of Bowie prior to 1972.

In June 1973, RCA released the single "All the Madmen
/ Soul love" in Eastern Europe with a series of singles both times as the previous LPs.

launched in 1983 in Spain a bootleg reissue 7 "promo entitled" All Fools, "with photos of 1970, the same topic published in both sides and the RCA logo on the cover. Four years then d uring the tour "Glass Spider" Bowie performing "All the Madmen", 17 years after its release and without having played all the time ziggy and subsequent tours.

24.David Bowie: "Memory of a Free Festival (Part 1) / Memory of a Free Festival (part 2)"

Mercury, instead of Philips, making the distribution of Bowie and released this single, on June 12, 1970, with the last item on the second LP reversals and divided into two parts (of 3: 59 and 3:31) more power than the original.

The issue was re-recorded on 3, 14 and 15 January 1970 Advision studies, with Tony Visconti on bass and production and the debut of future "Spiders from Mars" Mick Ronson on guitar and Mick Woodmansey on drums. Unfortunately the success of "Space Oddity" and Bowie did not return began to be seen as a "one-hit-wonder", the single was a flop in England and the U.S., selling less than 200 copies in each country. In July the 7 "is released in Germany, Holland and Scandinavia, without success.

In 1990 both versions are included in the reissue of EMI / Rykodisc disc "Space oddity" . (More information about live performances and covers the topic in the post No. 20)
parenthetically
should mention the 7 "" Dib Cochran & The Earthwings ":" Oh Baby / Universal Love "a kind of fusion of the T. Rex to Bowie was not in port. The single released by the label in August 1970 Bell actually Bowie did not include or Mickey Finn's T. Rex, but many websites say that if they participated. The truth is that they were summoned to the recording, but finally appeared. The musicians that if present were Marc Bolan on vocals and guitar, John Cambridge on drums, Tony Visconti on bass and producing and Rick Wakeman on piano, as the memory of Visconti himself. 23.David Bowie: "The world of David Bowie "

First compilation of Bowie, is a selection of subjects who recorded for Dram, a subsidiary of Decca, which took advantage of the popularity of Bowie shamelessly, editing the topics in dozens of LPs and later CDs. The value of this compilation is that it is the first and has three issues that had not been published ever: "Karma man," "Let me sleep beside you" and "In the heat of the morning" songs that Bowie recorded for a future LP or to be released on singles. The first two were probably recorded in September 1967 and the third in March 1968 in the same sessions of "London bye ta-ta." "Let me sleep beside you" was featured in the film "Love you till tuesday" 1969.

The list of topics is as follows, on side A were: "Uncle Arthur", "Love you till Tuesday," There is a happy land "," Little Bombardier "," Sell me a coat "," Silly boy blue "(the six taken from the first LP) and "The London boys" (B side of "Rubber band" , first released on LP). On the B side was "Karma man", "Rubber band" (the single version ), "Let me sleep beside you", "Come and buy my toys", "She's got medals" (the latter two of LP ), "In the heat of the morning" and "When I live my dream" (the LP ). Only four items LP were not included in the compilation.

The album was released in March 1970 by the British Decca in the U.S. also was published and launched a circulation of 8-track cartridges. Unfortunately for the LP Decca did not enter the charts.

Mike Vernon was the producer of LP, which had participated Bowie on vocals, guitar and saxophone, Dek Fearnley on bass, Derek Boyes on organ, John Eager on drums and session musicians unspecified. The three previously unreleased tracks were produced by Tony Visconti and Bowie had on vocals and guitar, John McLaughlin on guitar, Herbie Flowers and the same Visconti on bass, Barry Morgan and Andy White on drums and Steve Peregrin-Took (member of T. Rex) in pixiephone (a kind of melodic toy, popular with children of the 60 ), it was registered on behalf of the sessions led by the strings, most of the sessions were conducted in the Advision Studios in London.

Three new songs were played on the BBC, first was "In the heat of the morning" was recorded, along with four other items first LP, on December 18, 1967 for the program Top Gear ( check post 11 for more information about this show ) version is prior to the recording studio, even the beginning of the first stanza has a different letter. On May 13, 1968 Bowie returns to Top Gear and again plays "In the heat of the morning" with "Karma Man" and three other topics, including "When I'm Five" ( post 17 for credit check and musicians ). "Let me sleep beside you" was played on the show David Lee Travis, along with "Janine" and "Unwashed and Somewhat Slightly Dazed" ( check post 20 for more info ). On February 5, 1970 performing "Karma man" in the "Sunday Show" ( back to post 20 for the info .)

In 1973, Decca reissued the LP in a stereo version (the original was mono) with an inappropriate cover of Ziggy Stardust, clear publicity stunt to capitalize on the popularity of the time. In 1981 the English Decca reissued the LP with a cover similar to the original and the following year the Japanese London label published the album named "Bowie", using the photo of the '73 edition. The reissues continue in 1983 with the LP "Coccinelle variete", another reissue of the Decca cover of Ziggy times, and in 1994 with the CD version of the German label Spectrum, this time with a photo of the 1990 world tour .

In 2000 "Let me sleep beside you" was re-recorded for the project "Toy", but never officially published and remains unpublished.

* are available to listen to three new songs for the compilation, the others are in the post 8 , 10 and 11 .

22.David Bowie:" The Prettiest Star / Conversation Piece "

In March 1970, Bowie released a new theme, not included in the previous LP , it is "The Prettiest Star" together with "Conversation piece "on the B side Bowie was re-arming "London bye ta ta", a topic that had already recorded as a demo for Dram (there is also a demo version on side B which has been included in some bootlegs), but apparently decided at the last moment to launch "The Prettiest Star" a subject supposedly dedicated to his girlfriend Angie.

This time it's Mercury label releasing the single in England (Philips distributed in Italy, Spain and Japan) on March 6, 1970, unfortunately it was a new failure in the race of David, selling less than 800 copies and obviously not entering the rankings, something not expected Bowie and his manager after the success of " Space oddity. "

The songs were recorded at Trident Studios in London on 8, 13 and January 15 with special guest Marc Bolan on guitar 1. Bolan was the leader of T. Rex and both artists very soon become "rivals" to get the scepter of the king of glam rock. As both were working with Visconti as producer, so it was not difficult to join them. Despite the clash of egos mutual respect lasted until the sudden death of Marc in 1977. Tells the story of Marc's wife, June, entered the study at the end of the recording and told Bowie "Marc is very good for you, it's great to be playing on this record." Addition Bolan in "The Prettiest Star" played Visconti (bass) and John Cambridge (drums), than voice and acoustic guitar of Bowie. In "Conversation Piece" are repeated Bowie on vocals and guitar and Cambridge, but Visconti replaces John Lodge on bass and Tim Renwick on Bolan on lead guitar.

The question had already been played live before the single release, February 5 was played on the BBC show "Sunday show" (go to post # 20 for details) .

The single was released in the same month of March in Scandinavia, Begic,
South Africa and Ireland, was published in April in Germany and Holland appears in May in Italy and Spain and arrived in Japan in October.

Bowie gives a second chance to the item on the LP include "Aladdin Sane" in 1973, this time without the Bolan, Mick Ronson but recreating almost note for note arrangements Marc also played it live at some shows during 1973.

In 1989 the original version of "The Prettiest Star" appears for the first time on CD on Rykodisc compilation "Sound + Vision", "Conversation Piece" must wait until 1990 to appear as a bonus track on the reissue of the LP " Space Oddity. " In 1997 vesion including compiling unreleased stereo "The Best of David Bowie 1969/1974" on EMI.

"Conversation Piece" was one of the themes of the first stage of his career that Bowie selected for the project "Toy" which never saw the light. In 2000 re-recorded the B side of this single, which appears two years later as a bonus track on the album "Heathen" with the slightly inaccurate subtitle "Written in 1969 - Recorded in 1970 - re-recorded in 2002." Finally in 2003

Ian McCulloch covers "The Prettiest Star" in tribute "Starman", included in the British magazine Uncut.

Filip Dujardin II. Terrifying night

A quella night was terrifying. I chalked it up to dinner in the restaurant Asturian Afuega'l Pitu cheese, sausage Matachana much cider and to finish off the visit to Zalak with the drinks and the cascaruja.
felt a stone in the stomach, a huge stone, a stone without the punishment of shooting time and water erosion and wind. My stomach was a cement mixer but now armed. I Survived
as water-based and Almax until dawn. Since I could not stand it any longer in bed, crawled to the window, opened the curtains and wrapped in a hallucination I understood everything.

I. Filip Dujardin Crossroads

L levo years living here, this vast plain lazy and sleep under any tree. I remember when this was a wasteland. One day someone planted here some planks and covered with cardboard and sheets. With the passage of time were coming and encouraged other men, followed by stacking materials to build their own shelter. That was taking shape and growing proportion. Every day is larger. The growth rate is soaring. They come and go hardly. I watch in the distance from the sidewalk.

21.David Bowie:" Young man alone, lonely girl / The Wild Eyed Boy From freecloud "

"Ragazzo solo, ragazza single" is supposed to be the Italian version of "Space oddity " but in reality it is a completely different letter, written by Italian composer Mogol and speaks of a love story of a lone pair that is on top of a mountain. Bowie sang about the music of "Space Oddity" repeating phonemes actually thinking that singing a translation of your letter into Italian.

The single was released by Philips in December 1969 as an attempt to make stronger Bowie from entering the Italian market, considering that "Space Oddity" reached the scene 54 ranking, but the single failed to figuration. On the flip side was the single version of "The wild-eyed boy from freecloud" with Bowie cello accompanied by Paul Buckmaster.

Within days of launching the single two Italian groups, "Equipe 84" and "The Computers", launched the theme in their own singles. In February 1970 the theme is displayed in a 7 "promo with other artists under the label Phonogram.

Italian RCA edit a promo single in 1982 with "Ragazzo solo, ragazza single" accompanied by "Peace On Earth-Little Drummer Boy" on side B, to promote the compilation "Rare Bowie" the same year.

In March 1999 the issue is included in the compilation Italian artists "Beat 600-60's & 70's Golden Nuggest Tracks"

* "The wild-eyed boy from freecloud" is included in the post No. 19, so that is not in this audio file.

Á ngel, my dear friend. I spend the images of our friendship, often silent, but deep. And dry resonates the air like an explosion, your absence. I imagine that you have started your journey to Ithaca.
...
Keep Ithaka always in your mind.
Getting there is your destiny.
But do not hurry the journey.
Better than last years
and dock, old man, on the island,
Rich you have gained on the way
not put up with that Ithaca you rich.
Ithaka gave you the marvelous journey.
Without her you would have set out.
But there is nothing left to give.
if you find her poor,
Ithaca has not deceived you.
Wise as you have become,
with so much experience,
understand and what they mean Ithacas.

Dragon Ball Z Bulma Shower

20.David Bowie:" David Bowie "

Bowie second and first LP for Philips, like the LP Dram had no name. On the A side was the now famous "Space oddity " full version "Unwashed and Somewhat Slightly Dazed", "Letter to Hermione" and extensive "Cygnet Committee". On the back there were five issues, "Janine", "An occasional dream", " The wild eyed boy from freecloud " in a version with orchestra, "God knows I'm good" and the equally lengthy "Memory of a free festival . The ten tracks were composed David Bowie.

During 1969 Bowie wrote and recorded demos of songs, some of them circulated on bootlegs and through the Internet in recent years. Besides the aforementioned demo of "Space oddity " there are previous versions of "Letter to Hermione" (originally titled "I'm not quite"), "Cygnet Committee" (called "Lover to the dawn") and "Janine" . The album achieves an interesting blend of folk, ballads and progressive rock.

way of advancement "Janine" and "Unwashed and Somewhat Slightly Dazed "had been interpreted in the BBC, October 20, 1969, with Mick Wayne and Tim Renwick on guitar, John Lodge on bass and John Cambridge on drums, production was conducted by Paul Williams and the show was passed six days after its recording.

The LP is released on November 4, 1969 in England, with all tracks produced by Tony Visconti (except the two that had been developed in single, "Space Oddity" and "The wild eyed boy from freecloud "which were conducted by Gus Dudgeon) and was recorded at Trident Studios in London between June and September. The vinyl cover was double, was opened and revealed the letters on the back, a considerable investment for the time stamp, although some issues, such as Australia, the case was simple.

The musicians involved were: David Bowie on vocals, guitars, electric organ, Stylophone and kalimba, Keith Christmas and guitars Mick Wayne, Tim Renwick on guitar and flute, Tony Visconti on bass and flutes; Herbie Flowers on bass, Rick Wakeman on piano, mellotron and harpsichord, John Cambridge and Terry Cox on drums, Benny Marshall on harmonica, Paul Buckmaster on cello for "The wild eyed boy from freecloud" as well an orchestra of 50 artists.

A few days after the LP was released in U.S. on Mercury label, but this time the album is named "Man of words, man of music" and a different cover. There is also a detail not least, the end of the 2 nd issue, "Unwashed and Somewhat Slightly Dazed" in the English version there is a small 40-second jam entitled "Do not sit down", that is not listed in the credits. In the U.S. version of this jam is removed, which over the years led to the choice of English and American versions of "Unwashed and Somewhat Slightly Dazed" had a different duration, in fact the song is the same, but the difference is the absence of "Do not sit down", whose duration had been added to "Unwashed and Somewhat Slightly Dazed" on the cover English.

Despite the good results of the single and critical acclaim from the press, the LP does not enter the charts in England or the United States, jeopardizing the contract with the Philips / Mercury.

Bowie returns to the BBC on February 5, 1970 and played seven songs from the album, leaving out only to "Space Oddity" and "Letter to Hermione. " The show was broadcast three days later and was Bowie on vocals and guitar, John Cambridge on drums, Tony Visconti on bass, Mick Ronson on guitar and Jeff Griffin in production. Note that the version of "Memory of a free festival is an edited version, soon to be released in single . Unfortunately, the master recording was accidentally deleted, had just come down to us through bootlegs taken from a cassette recorded directly from the radio, with a clearly inferior quality to the original tape. Finally, for the release of "Bowie at the Beeb", the official compilation of the BBC, 2000, Bowie gave his own master recording, saving the situation. On March 25, Bowie will "Sound of the seventies," the show on the BBC Andy Ferris, with the same musicians and production of Bernie Andrews, to play "The wild eyed boy from freecloud" along with three other issues sessions next LP, the show was broadcast on 6 April.

buys rights RCA recordings from the Philips in 1972 and in November, three years after the original release and building on the success of Bowie that year, reviving the LP. This time he has a new name "Space Oddity" a new cover with a picture of Bowie in 1972 and finally eliminating the jam "Do not sit down." The first copies of the album came with a poster of the cover and in Spain the album was titled "Space Odyssey." This time the disk if it was successful in the U.S. rose to number 16 in England at No. 17 and in Australia at number 21. In 1976 and 1978, the LP is reissued in Japan.

During the tour of 1973 Bowie plays (in addition to "Space Oddity" and "The wild eyed boy from freecloud") "Memory of a free festival" in some of the dates.

In October 1984, RCA reissued the LP "Space oddity", but this time throws a CD release, a new format that was entering the market with force . The CD edition for England and Europe was made in Germany and the U.S. edition and the rest of the world was made in Japan.

EMI in 1990 for England and the rest of the world and the U.S. Rykodisc to acquire the Bowie catalog for the RCA and released the LP "Space Oddity." In 2LPs a beautiful edition, the second disc, which was only printed one side, there were three bonus tracks: "Conversation Piece", the B-side single "The Prettiest Star," "Memory of a free festival (part 1 ) "and" Memory of a free festival (part 2) ", both made up another single 1970. The issue remained the face of 1972, the reverse was the picture of" Man of words, man of music "and within was the cover of 1972, this edition also did justice to "Do not sit down" replacing the jam and put it on credit. They are edited version CD with bonus tracks at the end of "Memory of a free festival." This edition did appear in the ranking No 64 English.

LP Some items were incorporated into Bowie tribute album, the first is "Unwashed and Somewhat Slightly Dazed" covered by "Bare-Ass Minimums" in tribute "Only Bowie's" 1995, then "Memory of a free festival," covered by "Mercury Rev" in tribute to "Crash course of the ravers" in 1996 and David Fisher in the tribute "Diamond gods", 2001; and "God knows I'm good" in the same tax "Diamond gods" has a version by "Bellatrix."

In September 1999, EMI reissued on LP and CD, restores the original cover and back cover, retains the name "Space oddity", but unfortunately discard bonus tracks. Finally, on January 22, 2007 Japanese EMI released the LP in a CD with a version that mimics the cover art of vinyl

19 . David Bowie's "Space Oddity / The Wild Eyed Boy From freecloud"

(This is probably the longest post and the highest numbers images of the entire blog).

Finally! After five years of Bowie recordings to be featured in the rankings, not only that, reaching the top 5 in the ranking of England and launched what is probably his most famous song.

already split with Dram, in early 1969 he auditioned for the Philips Bowie, singing with his friend John Hutchinson (guitar and vocals), among other things, "Space Oddity." It's probably the song that convinced the label executives and sign the contract by an LP with the option of a second if the first does appear in the rankings.

A Bowie this summer filming the movie "Love you till Tuesday" with Dram and where material includes a first version of "Space Oddity" sound closer to Dram and where you can see what it would be a their first "music."

The single is released the same day the Apollo 11 mission landed on 11 July 1969, and is accompanied by "The wild eyed boy from freecloud" on side B, a ballad with Bowie on vocals and guitar, Paul Buckmaster on cello. U.S. and Canadian distribution label was in charge of Mercury and the single reached the place # 124 in the U.S. ranking at # 8 in Holland, # 13 in Ireland, Sweden # 15 and # 54 in Italy. The original versions were all mono English, although some 7 "did not leave specified. In the Netherlands some promo copies were printed in stereo and were imported to England.

LP was being produced by Tony Visconti, who had worked with Bowie in some presentations at the BBC , but Visconti does not like "Space Oddity" and decides that Gus Dudgeon is in charge of producing this single in advance. It is even rumored to be thought of George Martin (producer of The Beatles) for the production of LP . The musicians who participated in this historic recording session at Trident Studios in London on June 20, 1969, were Herbie Flowers on bass, Terry Cox on drums and Rick Wakeman on piano and mellotron, as well as session musicians unspecified by the strings. Bowie took over the vocals, guitars and the "Stylophone" an electronic instrument created in 1967 by Brian Jarvis and has been used by groups like Kraftwerk, Erasure, Pulp, Orbital, Marilyn Manson and The Racounters.

The single title is similar to the novel by Arthur C. Clark and Stanley Kubrick's film 1968: "2001 a Space Oddisey" whose main character curiously named David Bowman. Is said to be inspired by the plight of the astronauts who lived through the Apollo 8 mission, but the issue actually tells the adventures of Major Tom, a fictional astronaut who becomes depressed during his mission to space.

Versions of the 7 "are edited from the version due out in November in the LP of 5'14". In England "Space oddity" lasts 4'33 "and in the U.S. and Canada only lasts 3'23", basically making the issue to finish sooner. In the U.S. the B side is also edited, making it start from the second verse and being in 3'14''.

's success in England makes The single is edited throughout the world, is published in September in Germany, Italy and the Netherlands (in the latter includes a spoken introduction to "The wild eyed boy from freecloud" from an audition for the Philips). On October 7 "is released in France (launched two versions with slightly different covers) and Australia (Oceania was slightly different issue, leaving the side A of 4'30"). In December, published in Norway, Portugal, Belgium (some copies were imported from Holland and then printed mono and stereo versions Belgium), New Zealand, Turkey, Brazil and Lebanon. In January 1970 in Japan and Spain, and in February in Greece and Brazil (where the 7 "should be played at 33rpm, probably to avoid problems with the 4:33, a somewhat lengthy period for singles). At the end of 1969 "Space oddity" is released on a promo single under the label Phonogram in Italy, together with other artists (also in Italy in 1970 he published an Italian version theme Bowie recorded for the same, but that deserves its own post.)

some versions were also launched promotional single in July 1969 released a 7 "with the edited version (3'23") monaural sides A and B in the U.S., also in the U.S., December 69, released a 7 "version of 3'23''on both sides, but this time in stereo.

In New Zealand released a promotional LP called "The Philips Revolutionaries Sampler," which included "Space Oddity" and other twelve songs by other artists on the label, which highlighted Manfred Mann.

There are very few records of live performances of the item prior to 1972, only remain in the program presentations TV show "Hits A Go Go" of November 2, 1969 (where he playback) and the live performance at the ceremony of awarding prizes "Ivor Novello" of May 10, 1970, where "Space Oddity" was awarded for its originality (both can be found on youtube.) But from 1972 to 1997 the theme was played on all the tours that Bowie began. Commemorating its 50 years (in 1997) Bowie decided not to play more the issue, but there are records of two performances later in the concert for the liberation of Tibet from February 22, 2002, held at Carnegie Hall in New York and a show in the German city of Lunden on 5 July of that year.

buy RCA In 1972 Bowie recordings for Philips and published in June that year a 7 "promo in the U.S. with" Space Oddity, "" Moonage Daydream "," Life on Mars "and" It Is not Easy. " On May 22, Bowie had played the theme on the BBC, with Mick Ronson on guitar, Trevor Bolder on bass, Mick Woodmansey on drums and Roger Pusey production, but was not transmitted. In December of that year and Bowie's fame through the roof, the RCA funds a video for the track, which is directed by Mick Rock while Bowie was recording the album "Aladdin Sane." In January 1973, the RCA decided to exploit "Space Oddity", accompanied by promotional clip is released around the world (There are 7 records in England, USA, Canada, Spain, South Africa, Turkey and even Chile) with " The man who sold the world " on the B side In Mexico, made an exception and the 7 "is accompanied by" Starman "and in Thailand" Space oddity "is accompanied by" Fool "Elvis Presley (7" semi-legal Records distributed by Thai Nakorn). In Japan, 7 "was released in March along with" It Is not Easy "as a face B. In Portugal 7" also has " The man who sold the world " on side B, but it launched only in May. And Peru is "The jean genie" the issue of the B-side There is also a promotional edition released in the U.S. and Spain, where the LP version of 5'14 "is on side A and a new edition of 3'53" on the face accompanying B. A second promotional version is distributed in September in Italy, with "Life on Mars?" As the B-side With regard to figuration in the rankings, in England reached number 15.

In September 1974 the magazine "Record Mirror" comes accompanied by a flexidisc (under the label Lynton) with a selection of greatest hits of Bowie which includes an excerpt from "Space Oddity" on track 2.

RCA returns to the fray in September 1975, this time with more success, makes it to No. 1-ranked English, getting the first top one in the history of the career of David Bowie. This time "Space oddity" is accompanied by "Changes" and "Velvet Goldmine" on side B, although some variations, such as the 7 "Yugoslav, who was only a" Velvet Goldmine "on the back and 7" promo featured English repeated in December that a " The man who sold the world " on the B side The 1975 edition was reissued in December 1982 as 7 "1 picture discs boxset of "Fashions" and individually in June 1983.

In June 1976 the 7 "with" The man who sold the world "the reverse is reprinted in Germany and Canada, and re-released in 1982 only in Germany, on the cover of the issues appeared incorrectly German subtitle "Recorded 1972" on both sides of the single, fixed error in the labeling of both sides, which specifies the correct recording year, 1969 for side A and 1970 for B. Also in Germany is published in 1980 "Space oddity" with "Alabama Song" and "Amsterdam" on the B side

In 1979, RCA released "Space Oddity" to "Fame" and side B in Italy, and later that same year, Bowie recorded a new version of the theme for the TV New Year Kenneth Everett. RCA next year editing the single "The cointinuing history of Major Tom", where "Space oddity" is accompanied by "Ashes to ashes" in versions of the single and the LP, as a way to connect the stories of both songs.

In 1984 appears for the first time in audio music included in the film "Love you till Tuesday" in the LP of the same name under the label Dram, there can be heard first initial version of the topic, published at 3:45. The LP is reissued on CD in 1992 and there "Space oddity" lasts 4:31. In January 1997, the Dram launches a promotional CD single with the Greek magazine "Zoo", which includes the original version of "Space Oddity" accompanied by "The laughing gnome ", "Rubber band " and " Love you till Tuesday. "

The acoustic demo recorded in the audition for the Philips label is rescued and included in the compilation of 1989 "Sound + Vision" of the Rykodisc label.

In December 1993 he launched another Rykodisc compilation called The Singles 1969 to 1993 "which includes an edit of 3'31" of the item, which is not the same, but try to resemble the July edition of the "original USA.

"Space oddity" has been covered among many other artists: David Matthews (1977), The London Symphony Orchestra (1978), The Flying Pickets (1985), Space Girls (in tribute " Ashes to Ashes ", 1998), Natalie Merchant (1999), Halloween (1999), Pitch Black Dream (in the tribute" Spiders from Venus ", 2003), Seu Jorge (2005), Def Leppard (2006) and Cat Power (2008)

11.David Bowie:”David Bowie”

First LP Bowie, recorded in Studio # 2 Decca in West Hampstead from 11 November 1966 and February 25, 1967, produced by Mike Vernon, with Bowie voice, guitar and saxophone, Dek Fearnley on bass, Derek Boyes on organ, John Eager on drums and session musicians unspecified.

On the A side was "Uncle Arthur", "Sell me a coat", "Rubber Band", "Love you till Tuesday," There is a happy land "," We are hungry men "and" When I live my dream. " And on the flip side: "Little bombardier "," Silly boy blue "," Come and buy my toys "," Join the gang "," She's got medals, "" Maid of Bond Street "and" Please Mr.Gravedigger. " The 14 tracks are composed of Bowie.

The album was released first in the U.S., April 67, mono and stereo versions, but "We are hungry men" or "Maid of Bond Street", with only six songs per side and with errors writing of "Little Bombardier" (credited as "Little Bombadier") and "Silly boy blue" (wrongly written as "Silly boy Blues"). June 1 1967, the day of the release of "Sgt Pepper's "by The Beatles, LP Dram launches in England, and a roll of 8-track cartridges. Following his slump the LP does not enter the rankings.

mono editions had different mixtures, which are felt mainly in "Uncle Arthur" (where your palms away from the start and end) and "Please Mr. Gravedigger", the latter as "Rubber Band" had rewritten as the master of the first recording sessions are lost. A sad loss for although "Rubber Band" and "London boys" were printed a single, original version of "Please Mr. Gravedigger" was lost for many years, until 2007, an acetate with the version circulated among fans, revealing a body that came with sound effects and voice Bowie.

There are some demo versions of some songs that circulated in some bootlegs in later years. One of them is "Love you till tuesday", of which there is a demo version and a version sung in German. There are also five other versions of "When I live my dream", a rewrite that apparently was intended to be the 4th single for Dram, a version with a letter slightly different (known as "My Dream"), a German version, recorded in 1969 for a TV program entitled "Mit Mir In Deinem Traum" and finally two versions included in the pantomime of 1970, "The Looking Glass Murders." From "Silly boy blue" there is also a demo version recorded with "The Buzz" (the same Fearnley, Boyes and John Hutchinson Eager plus guitar).

The December 18, 1967 Bowie recorded "Love you till tuesday", "Silly boy blue," "When I live my dream" and "Little Bombardier" to the "Top Gear" on BBC, which was broadcast on December 24, 1967 and repeated on January 28, 1968. Bowie is joined by Arthur Greenslade and his orchestra of 16 musicians, was produced by Bernie Andrews. "Silly boy blue" was also recorded for the second presentation of Bowie at the BBC, also in "Top Gear", the May 13, 1968, but was not transmitted. This recording was produced by Tony Visconti and 14 other musicians, including Herbie Flowers on bass, Barry Morgan on drums and John McLaughlin on guitar.

Also in 1968 the British singer Billy Fury covers "Silly boy blue" in a single, with "One minute woman" and side B (this version was included on the tribute CD "Oh you pretty things", 2006) . In February next year Bowie shooting a film called "Love you till tuesday", which included some tracks from this LP and some new songs. Among the topics were "Rubber Band", "Love you till tuesday" (without the coda), "Sell me a coat" (with additional vocals by Hermione Farthingale and John Hutchinson) and "When I live my dream" ( the new version for the 4 th single for Dram).

LP is reissued on several occasions, the first in 1973 in Japan under the Dram label, King Records, a reissue well known Argentina in 1976, an English and French, 1980, 1981. In 1983 Germany and the U.S. appears in the first edition LP on CD, under the label London, which is reprinted in 1987 and reissued in 1984 on LP in England including a cassette version. In Spain, the album was released twice in CD format, the first in 1991 when included in issue No. 28 of the magazine "Jazz and Rock" and the second in 1993 in a special edition for the "World Book Club" within the series "60, 60." Rebound In 1998, the label reissued the CD in the U.S. but not "Silly Boy Blue" and "Little Bombardier", a curious choice, perhaps tried to replay the original American version of twelve songs, but rather to exclude the issues that drew the original version left aside the two issues that were poorly written. In any case since 1970 that the Dram material is published in a lot of compilations, some of them even included the full LP.

In 2000 Bowie rewrite "Silly boy blue" for its project "Toy", but this is never officially published in February next year's performed live with Tony Visconty, Moby and a choir of Tibetan monks in the Tibet benefit concert held at Carnegie Hall in New York.

10.David Bowie:”The laughing gnome / The gospel according to Tony day”

Second single for Dram, released on April 14, 1967 in England, USA (distributed by London) and some European countries like Belgium (where in a production effort the single had a cover, this being Bowie's first record to have one) unfortunately was not lucky this new foray into the single market and failed miserably in all rankings.

The songs were recorded in the Study No 2 Decca West Hampstead, on January 26, 1967, with Mike Vernon in the production, the stable Fearnley, Boyes and Eager (bass, keyboard and drums) Bowie on vocals and guitar and artists.

"The Laughing Gnome" was a conversation between Bowie and a gnome, played by Bowie himself with his voice played at double speed. An undetermined number were printed on transparencies with different editions of the topic, from 2:20 to 3:30, some even include additional voices gnome.

On June 67, at the same time it was edited 1 LP Bowie , TV presenter Ronnie Hilton launches "The laughing gnome" in a single, B-side of "If I were a rich man." This version was included in the compilation Oh You Pretty Things "(2006) Castle seal.

In August 1973, taking advantage of the great success of the LPs "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars" and "Aladdin Sane", Dram reissued the single getting what they expected to have achieved six years earlier, reaching the top of lists. "The laughing gnome" sells 250 000 copies, reaching No. 6 ranking in England and 12 weeks remaining in it. The single was released in much of Europe, some countries in Africa and the United States and Canada under the label London. In September was released in Germany and Spain with other B-sides ("Silly boy blue" and "Rubber band" respectively), the covers had multiple editions pictures of Bowie in 1973 with the look of Ziggy. Building on the success tibuto albums also appear during the same 73 shows "Sound like the best of David Bowie and Elton John", where session musicians cover "The laughing gnome."

In a second wave of revival of the sound of Bowie Dram and exploiting the anxiety of the fans during a break in his career, the label reissued the single in June 1982 without success nine years earlier. The following year the A-side is included in other taxes, "Sound like David Bowie," also recorded by session musicians unspecified.

Finally the issue also appears in taxes "Ashes to ashes" (1998) and "Diamond gods" (2001), covered by "Living room" and "Buster Bloodvessel" respectively. "The Gospel According to Tony Day" is covered by "Edwyn Collins" in tribute "Starman" in 2003, which was distributed by the British magazine Uncut.

9.Oscar:”Over the wall we go / Every day of my life”

Bowie gives one of his songs, "Over the wall we go ", Oscar (born Paul Oscar Beuselinck) an actor and singer, also known as Paul Dean, Paul Nicholas and Ivor Bird.

The single was produced by Robert Stigwood and arrangements They were exposed by Nicky Welsh. In the recording you can listen to Bowie and the Prisoner 33425.

Reaction seal the issue launched in January 67 with "Every day of my life" on the back, unfortunately failed to appear in the rankings. There is a website that states that the single was actually released in September 1966 with "Days gone by" B-side, but I have not found any images or articles on other sites to confirm the information.

Bowie demo version appears on several bootlegs and came to be played on Radio London in early 1967, but was censored on other radio stations for their content mockery of the prison system.

In 1977, the RSO label reissued the single, this time with "Beauty queen". Oscar uses the pseudonym "Ivor Bird" for this reissue, which cuts the original 1966 final. This latest version is included in the compilations "tribute" David Bowie Songbook "1997 and" Oh! You Pretty Things "in 2006.

8.David Bowie:”Rubber band / The London boys"

Bowie Wins Contract with Dram, another subsidiary label of Decca and London is also distributed in the U.S.. The demo contained three issues presented including "Rubber Band", which became the first single and is clearly influenced by the music and the vocal timbre of Anthony Newley.

The song is recorded at RG Jones studios in London on October 18, 1966, produced by Mike Vernon and Bowie on vocals and guitar, Dek Fearnley on bass, Derek Boyes in organ and John Eager on drums, plus Session musicians whose names are lost in time. Dram

launches single on December 2, 1966 in England, with "The London Boys" B-side, and in June 1967 in the U.S., accompanied by "There is a happy land." Unfortunately and despite the good reviews from the press the new single was a failure in Bowie's career.

Some websites say that in France launched the single "The London Boys / There is a happy land" the same Dec. 2, but that would be almost impossible because the B side was recorded just eight days before and could not have achieved mixed, printed on vinyl and shipping France. If this single was released in France, but only in 1975.

The LP "David Bowie", 1967 see a different version of the theme, which is included in the 1969 film "Love you till Tuesday." The demo version circulated only in a few cassettes, bootlegs.

A single of "T. Rex" entitled "London Boys", released in 1976, often often mistaken for the B side of "Rubber Band", but these are two different songs.

"The London Boys" was also recorded in 2000 for the project "Toy", but was never released officially, only a fragment of 1:30 was released as an advance for BowieNet subscribers during the same period interpreted Bowie live on tour LP "Hours" and included in the excellent presentation of June 27, 2000 at the BBC, although it was not broadcast on TV or out on the bonus disc of "Bowie at the Beeb" the same year ( see post # 7 for more info) .

7.David Bowie:”I dig everything / I’m not losing sleep”

Bowie returns loading and with The Buzz recorded a demo of his new composition: "I dig everything", but this time wanted to succeed Tony Hatch and replaces Buzz session musicians who recorded two songs written by Bowie in Pye studios in London on July 5, 1966.

Unfortunately the efforts of Bowie and Hatch do not work, the 7 "released in August sold very little and the pair separated after a third failure in a row, Bowie is also without a label to back it up.

As the two 7 "above, as a tribute to the band" The Great Imposters "cover both subjects in the LP" Dollars in Drag "in 1977. And the original versions are included in the compilation of 1985 "Anthology of British rock" label Compleat.

In 2000 Bowie rewrite "I dig everything" for the project "Toy", never the officially published, but included in the tour of the LP "Hours" in this context, the June 27, 2000 Bowie plays the theme with an excellent selection of hits from over an hour (which was also broadcast on TV and released as a bonus disc of "Bowie at the Beeb", although both are not included "I dig everything"). The session musicians were: Bowie on vocals and acoustic guitar, Earl Slick on guitar and Mark Plati, Gail Ann Dorsey on bass, Mike Garson on keyboards, Sterling Campbell on drums and Holly Palmer and Emm Gryner in choirs.

next year "I'm not losing sleep" is incorporated into the second installment of "Doin 'the Mod" the Castle Music label (titled "Jump and Dance") with other singles for Piccadilly and Pye stamps released between 1961 and 1970.

Phrases For Aknowledge

6.David Bowie:"Do anything you say / Good morning girl”

First recording as "David Bowie", despite having a band stable support called "The Buzz" and second single for Pye. This time the single was distributed only in England and was released on April 1, 1966, with dismal trade performance.

Again both Bowie songs are composed and produced by Tony Hatch in the studios of Pye in London, the recording session was held on March 7, 1966 and was with Bowie on vocals, guitar John Hutchinson, Dek Fearnley on bass, Derek Boyes on organ, John Eager on drums and session musicians unspecified.

Like as with the previous single ( post No. 5 ) Pye reissued on 7 "in September 1972, this time with" I dig everything "B-side, this version was released in Japan under the Teichiku label Pye licensed. You released a 7 "special (which was played at 33rpm and 45rpm not like the seven" traditional, so there was more space on each side) in October of that year with "Do anything you say" and "I dig everything "on side A and" Can not help thinking about me "and" I'm not loosing sleep "on side B, this latest version was re-launched in June 1978 by the Pye Canada.

As also happened with the 7 "back in 1977" The Great Imposters "cover her face in tribute to" Dollars in drag "and in 1985 both side A and B are included in" Anthology of British rock. "

In 1999 the compilation "I Dig Everything: The 1966 Pye Singles" includes an alternate mix of "Do anything you say" where is the piano. The following year the Castle Music label includes "Good morning girl" in the compilation "Doin 'the Mod 1: The Go-Go Train", the first of a series of compilations with music of the late 60s (64 to 67 in this case) of the stamps Pye and Piccadilly.

5.David Bowie and The Lower Third:"Can’t help thinking about me / And I say to myself"

First recording by the name of David Bowie and second single together with "The Lower Third" (Taylor, Givens and Lancaster), is also the second single with two original compositions of David, this time with the last name Bowie.

Bowie This time he records with the Pye label and produced by Tony Hatch, the strongman of A & R Seal, who recorded the group in the Pye studios in London. The single was released on January 14, 1966 in England and thanks to the label was distributed by Warner Bros is also launched U.S. in May of that year, being the first recording of Bowie to cross the Atlantic. Anyway, the single was another failure in his career.

"Can not help thinking about me" is also the first song from Bowie to appear on an LP, it is the compilation "Hitmakers Vol 4" Pye, also released in 1966 (some sources indicate that in March) and which included two themes of the "Kinks" and a "Donovan" among others.

Pye In September 1972, reissued internationally "Can not help thinking about me" but this time with "I'm not losing sleep" on side B, a clear signal achievement of the success of Bowie that year. Subsequently, the single is reissued in Canada in June 1978, but this time with "Do anything you say" as B-side

In 1977 "The Great Imposters" cover her face in tribute to "Dollars in drag." In 1985 two issues, in their original versions, are included in a compilation entitled "Anthology of British rock" launched by the Compleat label in 1985.

"Can not help thinking about me" was also included on a tribute LP entitled "Only Bowie" of 1995 in a group version of "Davy Jones' mannish iddeals" (interesting name).

Perhaps thinking of the project "Toy", although no record of who has worked on this issue, including the A-side Bowie on tour tracklist LP "Hours" and is presented in the BBC's "The Mark and Lard Show" on October 25, 1999, together with Page Hamilton and Mark Plati in guitar, Gail Ann Dorsey on bass, Mike Garson on keyboards, Sterling Campbell on drums, and Emm Gryner Holly Palmer on vocals and production by Will Saunders.

In 2002 the Castle Music label includes "Can not help thinking about me" on the compilation "Doin 'the Mod 4: Ready, Steady, Stop!" with other singles of the Pye and Piccadilly label released between 1965 and 1969.

4. Davy Jones and The Lower Third:"You’ve got a habit of leaving / Baby loves that way"

Soon record "I pity the fool" Bowie leaves "Manish Boys" and is next to Dennis Taylor (guitar, vocals), Graham Givens (bass and vocals) and Phil Lancaster (drums, vocals) the group "Davy Jones and the Lower Third "(with Bowie on vocals and sax) and recorded a 2nd single for Parlophone, first original songs on both sides of 7".

The recording was made in the same IBC studios in London and also featured as a producer Shel Talmy (who also took over some backing vocals). The 7 "was released on August 20, 1965 and in commercial terms was a resounding failure.

In 2000 Bowie LP start a project which never published, was to be called" Toy "and was to rewrite these early issues thirty-odd years later. Some subjects never saw the light, as "Liza Jane", but both "You've got a habit of Leaving" and "Baby Loves That Way" were released as B-sides of singles "Slow Burn" and "Everyone says hi" from the album "Heathen" in 2002. Looking remake versions and non-clone "You've got a habit of Leaving "was recorded at half the speed of the original version.

3.The Manish Boys:"I pity the fool / take my tip"

second single with the presence of Bowie as a performer, this time as frontman of The Manish Boys, "an R & B group that meets Bowie late 1964 and whose name was taken from a Muddy Waters song. With this group achieved a little more Bowie figuration, reaching playing at the Marquee Club, in the TV show Juke Box Jury and opening for "Gerry and the Pacemakers."

By 1965 the group included David Jones (Bowie) on vocals and alto sax, John Edward on guitar, John Watson on bass, John Whitehead on drums, Bob Solly on keyboards, baritone sax Wilf Byrne and Paul Rodriguez on tenor sax and trumpet.

The Manish Boys get a contract with Parlophone, a subsidiary label of EMI, the same as "The Beatles" and recorded two songs with producer Shel Talmy: "I pity the fool, "Malone Deadric original and recorded in 1961 by Bobby "Blue" Bland with great success, reaching the top of the lists of R & B and even reaching No. 48 of Billboard. Talmy hired to "I pity the fool" at a session guitarist Jimmy Page, future member of "The Yardbirds" and leader of "Led Zeppelin", who for recording session yields a riff of his responsibility to Bowie, who used years later in "The supermen " 1970 and "Dead Man Walking" 1997.

The March 5, 1979 EMI reissued the single and the next in a single 7 "with" I pity the fool "and" Take my tip " on side A and "You've got a habit of Leaving" and "Baby Loves That Way" in B.

The English label See for Miles buys rights distribution of the reprint of the 1979 single EMI and throws in a 10 "in October 1982, at 12" in Spain in 1983, at 12 "in June 1985 in England and on a CD single in France in 1990, which way to squeeze the product.
